Vancouver Cruise Ship Information – Alaska Cruises
Vancouver has two cruise ship terminals.
The main terminal, Canada Place Cruise Ship Terminal, is downtown, next to the Convention Centre, and in the same building as the Pan Pacific Hotel.
It is directly across the street from the Fairmont Waterfront hotel and one block from the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel. It is also two blocks from the Vancouver Float Plane (Seaplane) terminal.
The second terminal is Ballantyne Pier Cruise Ship Terminal, located in the Vancouver Port, about 10 minutes by taxi from most downtown Vancouver hotels. Ballantyne Pier sees only limited cruise ship traffic so it is most likely that you will embark and/or disembark at Canada Place Cruise Ship Terminal.
From May to October 2014, the following Cruise Ship Lines will visit Vancouver: Disney, Crystal, Oceana, Celebrity, Holland America, Royal Caribbean and Princess.
Getting To / From the Cruise Ship Terminals
The Canada Place Cruise Ship terminal is 30 minutes from the Vancouver International airport (YVR). Ballantyne Cruise Ship Terminal is about 40 minutes from YVR. Some cruise ship companies arrange buses to meet cruise passengers at the Vancouver International airport and transfer them to the cruise ship terminal.
If that is not the case with your cruise, you have several airport/cruise ship transfer options:
Pre Cruise Vancouver City Tour
This tour is an excellent choice if you want to see Vancouver before you embark on your Alaska Cruise. The tour picks you up at your Vancouver or Vancouver airport hotel, with your luggage, tours all the highlights of Vancouver and then drops you and your luggage at the appropriate cruise ship terminal with plenty of time to board your ship before sailing.
You can book your tour now and pay when you board the bus.
Post Cruise Vancouver City Tour
This tour is an excellent choice if you want to experience Vancouver after your cruise. The tour picks you up at the cruise ship terminal, with your luggage, tours all the highlights of Vancouver and then drops you and your luggage at the destination of your choice: a hotel, the train station or the airport.
You can book your tour now and pay when you board the bus.
The Canada Line Light Rail
Vancouver’s airport/downtown light rail system, called The Canada Line, runs between the airport and downtown.
To take the Canada Line to the Canada Place Cruise Ship terminal, take the train to the last stop, Waterfront Station. From there, you are a 5 minute walk to Canada Place cruise ship terminal.
If you have too much luggage to walk, take a taxi from Waterfront Station to Canada Place (a 2 minute taxi ride) or Ballantyne Pier (a 10 minute taxi ride), depending on your cruise ship point of departure.
The Canada Line costs around $10.50 per person and takes 25 minutes from the airport to Waterfront Station. It’s the fastest and most economical way to get downtown from the airport.
For about C$45, taxis are available just outside the Arrivals entrance at the airport.
For about C$60, limousines are available just outside the Arrivals entrance at the airport as well.
For individuals, couples, families and groups, you can book a pre cruise private tour of Vancouver. For private Vancouver tour information with pick up at the airport and drop off at the Cruise Ship Terminal, call 604-990-9299 or 1-800-913-9207 or 1-604-990-9299.
If you are flying into Seattle rather than Vancouver, you can take Amtrak trains, Quick Shuttle buses, Horizon Air flights or Avis, Hertz and Budget rental cars from Seattle to Vancouver. You have the same options for getting from Vancouver to Seattle.

The Amtrak train leaves Seattle at 7:45AM and 5:45 PM each day and arrives in Vancouver at 11:40 AM and 9:45 PM. Amtrak trains leave Vancouver each day at 6:40 AM and 5:45 PM. You’ll arrive in Seattle at 11:05 AM or 10:10 PM.
The Silver Cloud Stadium Hotel in Seattle offers free shuttle service from the Amtrak station to the hotel in Seattle.
Horizon Air offers frequent daily flights from SeaTac to Vancouver International Airport.
You can pick up a rental car at SeaTac, drive it to Vancouver, park it for a week, then pick it up when you get back from your Alaska cruise, return it to SeaTac and drop it off.
If you take the train to Vancouver, either Amtrak from Seattle and points south, or ViaRail from Edmonton and points east, you can easily get from Pacific Central Station, the main station in Vancouver, to the cruise ship terminals by taxi or SkyTrain.
The SkyTrain takes you to Waterfront Station in about 5 minutes, a 7 minute walk from Canada Place Cruise Ship Terminal.
An alternative is to take a taxi from the train station to the cruise ship terminal for about C$15. The SkyTrain doesn’t go to the cruise ship terminal at Ballantyne Pier. Your best transportation option from Pacific Central Station to Ballantyne Cruise Ship pier is a taxi for about C$10.00.
From Victoria, you can get to the Vancouver cruise ship terminals either by float plane or bus and ferry.
By Float Plane: The quickest and easiest way to get between Vancouver and Victoria is to fly. The trip takes 35 minutes and goes between downtown Vancouver (just west of the Canada Place cruise ship terminal) and Victoria’s Inner Harbour. C$210 per person each way including tax.
The luggage allowance on the float planes is 25 lbs per person. If you have more, you can bring it with you at no extra charge providing there is room.
