Rocky Mountaineer Calgary Trains

Beginning in 2015, there will be no direct train service between Vancouver and Calgary or Calgary and Vancouver. All our one way packages that begin or end in Calgary will include a tour, a rental car or a transfer between Banff National Park and Calgary or Calgary and Banff National Park or Calgary and Lake Louise.

Vancouver and Calgary are the two largest cities served by the Rocky Mountaineer. Many people want to travel between Vancouver and Calgary, and for the best scenery and the most memorable trip, the train is the best way to travel.

Keep in mind that the Rocky Mountaineer leaves Vancouver for Banff each Monday and Friday and leaves Banff for Vancouver each Wednesday and Sunday. Banff is 86 miles from Calgary and shuttle service between Banff and Calgary departs Banff, Calgary airport and downtown Calgary several times daily.

Please Note: The Rocky Mountaineer is the only train that travels between Vancouver and Banff or Lake Louise.  Service is seasonal.

There are three ways of getting between Banff and Calgary:
take the airport or downtown shuttle, there are 7 departures each day in both directions
rent a car in Calgary or Banff and drive – all our packages include the option to add a rental car to your package
tour between Banff and Calgary by tour bus – tours include visits to Banff Gondola and helicopter flightseeing (optional)

Our one way packages that begin or end in Calgary include transfers, tours or rental cars and many also include hotel accommodations in Calgary. Airport transfers in Calgary are convenient and affordable.

The ViaRail train operates between Vancouver and Jasper National Park (and points east), but ViaRail does not serve Calgary, Banff or Lake Louise.

Both Vancouver and Calgary have international airports so you can begin your visit to the Canadian Rockies by flying into either city. As I said earlier, we can arrange airport transfers in either or both cities.

If you begin your visit to the Rockies in Calgary, you can explore the Rockies and then catch the Rocky Mountaineer in Banff National Park, Lake Louise or Jasper National Park for your journey to Vancouver.

If your interest is only the Rocky Mountaineer train experience, you can take the train from Vancouver to Banff and then transfer to Calgary. However, if you want to experience both the train AND the Canadian Rockies, get off the train in Jasper, Lake Louise or Banff, rent a car or tour by motor coach through the Canadian Rockies.

At the conclusion of your visit to the Rockies, you can drive, tour or shuttle to Calgary. Bus, car rentals and shuttle service is available from Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff to Calgary. Service is available in both directions.

If you’re starting your visit to the Canadian Rockies in Calgary, fly into Calgary and take a shuttle from the Calgary airport to Banff. The shuttle will drop you at your Banff hotel.You can then pick up a rental car or see the Rockies by motor coach tour. You can then take the Rocky Mountaineer from Banff, or Jasper to Vancouver and fly out of Vancouver.
